2019 SPECIAL RECOGNITION AWARD WINNER

Dr. Emeka Ugwu.

Dr. Emeka Ugwu is a specialist  Family Physician. He is a Fellow of the South African College of Family Physicians. Dr. Emeka,  also has a Master' s degree in Entrepreneurship,  from the University of Pretoria. Dr Ugwu is the Managing Director of Truehealthmed24 incorporated & Dr E. J Ugwu incorporated. He is also the President of the Nigerian Doctors' Forum, South Africa (NDF-SA), the Welfare Secretary of All Nigerian Nationals In Diaspora, SA (ANNID SA), the chairman of the Nigerian American Group For Democratic Support, South Africa and the Secretary-General of the People's Democratic Party South Africa. He is happily married, with three children.

As the founder and current  President of the Nigerian Doctors' Forum South Africa, Dr Emeka has spent a lot of his time,  efforts and money, in building this organization to an enviable state.  This has assisted in uniting the Nigerian doctors in South Africa (SA), under one umbrella.

He has been at the forefront of fighting for the preservation of the rights of the Nigerian doctors in SA through the Health Professionals Councils of South Africa etc. He liaises with the two Nigerian missions in South Africa to push for any programmes that bring about positive narratives about Nigerian in South Africa.

Recently, he organized and led a team of Nigerian doctors in SA, to the Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria,  to meet a research team from the Nigerian Institute of Strategic Studies, with a view of putting heads together, to draft a workable model for the Nigerian health system.

Also recently, Dr. Emeka organized and led a delegation of Nigerian doctors to an orphanage, in Kalafong hospital in Pretoria to provide them with cash, various gift items,  a dryer, etc.  

He has in many years, organized and executed a free medical treatment for all Nigerians in SA, at the Nigerian Consulate, in collaboration with the Nigerian Consulate, Target laboratory, the Roche pharmaceutical, ANNID South Africa, the Gauteng Dept of health, etc. Through his leadership, the NDF-SA is currently organizing a free medicaHe recently signed an MOU with the Federal Ministry of Nigeria, on behalf of the NDF-SA,  in conjunction with sister bodies across the globe for various forms of collaboration amongst themselves, and the Nigerian government. This will include free medical missions to various communities in Nigeria.

As a patron to the Nigerian Students in South Africa, Dr. Emeka provides them the needed guidance.

Dr. Emeka has been very vocal in addressing the menace of xenophobic and Afrophobic violence against Nigerians and other nationals in South Africa, through media interviews etc. l mission in Soweto.
