Ken Ayere is one of the most outstanding Nigerians in South Africa. A man of many parts, Mr. Ayere is a father, a husband, a leader of people, a seasoned journalist, a publisher, a politician and a consummate businessman. 

As a journalist, he worked as the South Africa Bureau chief for the News Agency of Nigeria. Following up on his journalism career, Mr. Ayere went into publishing with the birthing of The Envoy newspaper- a platform for Nigerians in South Africa to tell their own stories. Mr. Ayere’s passion for all things Nigerian and African motivated him to open his first African-styled restaurant-Homebaze- in Randburg in 2003.  Over the years, the Nigerian entrepreneur has built the Homebaze brand into popular chain of African-styled restaurants around Gauteng. The impact of Homebaze in promoting Nigeria and Africa culture was recognized by the Nigerian Tourism Development that the organization honoured the Homebaze brand with National Merit award.

More than a decade on, Mr. Ayere’s commitment to Nigerian causes and Nigerians in South Africa remains unwavering. He has been consistent in providing visible and inspirational leadership to the Nigerian community as well as support to successive leaderships of the Nigerian Diplomatic Mission in South Africa. He has served as a member of Board of Trustees of the Nigerian Union and acted as the President of the Diaspora Organization of Nigerians in South Africa. As employer of labour, he continues to create hundreds of job opportunities for Nigerians, South Africans and other Africans through his chain of businesses.

All these and more, are some of the reasons why the Consul-General of the Consulate of Federal Republic of Nigeria, HE. Mr. Godwin Adama finds it compelling to honour Mr. Ayere with the maiden edition of the Consul General’s Special Recognition Award in the 2018 Nigerian Excellence Awards.
